Overwatch is a big deal these days. This includes the Overwatch League, or OWL, which starts up its second professional season in February.
It seems like every day someone is asking, “Are esports here to stay?”
And every day it seems like we get another answer from a person or group. That answer seems to overwhelmingly be “Yes.”
The Blizzard-owned OWL just got its first merchandise deal. When a huge company wants to start making jerseys for your league, it’s a good sign. Read on to find out more.
OWL Lands Deal With Fanatics
If you’ve ever worn apparel from your favorite sports team, chances are that it was made by Fanatics. This is the first esports deal for the major player that handles the merch stores for the NBA and NFL.
This deal is going to bring esports to the front of the mainstream, placing jerseys and other types of merchandise on the same shelves that have major sports league apparel.
In our opinion, this is a great thing. Esports are the way of the future. It’s a smart business move for them to get in on the action now.
However, it’s a good thing for OWL too. Brand building is an important part of any business. And that’s exactly what this esports league is. It’s a business that promotes a product, which is Overwatch. Blizzard is moving towards the mainstream with gaming and increasing brand awareness is the first step to next leveling their successful product.
We’re excited to see what comes next.
