We all love YouTube. The stats that prove it are overwhelming. Google decided to take our love for the platform and try to compete with Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon.
This has proven to be a mistake.
The Digital Worm was a big fan of Cobra Kai. The show was fun, smart, and paid a ton of homage to the original movie. Unfortunately, YouTube doesn’t have the budget for original programming. At least, not like its competitors do.
And they’ve decided it’s not worth it to compete against the big boys. With Disney+ on the horizon and DC already creating content, YouTube is taking a different approach.
If It Ain’t Broke
Google has had so much success with YouTube for many reasons.
First, they allow anyone to create a channel. If you work hard and your content is successful, you’re rewarded with the ability monetize. Even smaller creators can monetize right away with affiliate marketing and sponsored content.
Secondly, advertisers love the platform. With cord cutting growing in popularity, YouTube and Twitch have become the best places to spend advertising dollars.
The ads and content creators are already bringing in a ton of cash.
While the idea of creating a subscription service was interesting, it was probably doomed from the get-go. So Google has decided to get back to basics and offer their original content for free.
This will go into effect “sometime next year” according to a spokesman. So if you are excited about season 2 of Cobra Kai, with any luck, you won’t have to pay a dime for it. You will, however, have to sit through some ads. But if you consume a lot of YouTube content, this isn’t going to be anything you aren’t already used to.
We think this is a brilliant move on Google’s part.
They’ve decided to stick with what they know. If they want to try and compete with the big name streaming services, it’s going to be by fighting them on their own terms.
